The Big Show

I found myself liking Todd more and more the closer it got to our Friday night date with Valerie. I had not felt much guilt about cheating on him with his boss up to that point, but something about confessing my love to Valerie had taken my betrayal to another level. I kept this from Valerie and stewed on it.

The worst was when I found myself looking at old pictures of vacations Todd and I took as a couple and things we did together. There was Palm Springs, Atlantic City, and Niagara Falls. There was our honeymoon in Bali with the monkey that tried to crawl up my shirt and there I was in that red bikini he liked so much he made me wear it in bed.

I looked at him across our apartment and watched him tapping away at his laptop, working on some sort of presentation for a meeting. Todd was sure he was about to get promoted and he had no idea what was coming. A part of me wanted to tell him, to make it easier on him, but I figured he would simply refuse to go.

That would disappoint Valerie. Disappointing her was worse than breaking my husband’s heart. Such is the unfairness of love’s weight on the scales.

By Friday night, Todd was a nervous wreck, and I think he had finally realized something else was going on.

“Bill said he saw you going into Valerie’s office almost an hour before I saw you coming out,” said Todd as he was getting dressed, “and he said ‘You know what that means’ like I am supposed to know what that means. What the hell does it mean, Audrey?”

Todd was struggling with his necktie. I pushed his hands away from it and stood in front of him, giving him a perfect Windsor as I tried to calm his fears.

“She wanted this to be special, so we had to work things out.”

“Bill seemed to think you two were… I don’t even know…”

“We were just figuring things out,” I said as I finished the knot. I smoothed his tie down his shirt. I tried to change the subject by telling him, “You look handsome.”

“Thanks. That red dress is smoking hot on you. Are those shoes new?”

“Yeah, I bought them at Lombardo. You like?” I turned my toe so he could see the flashy red shoe with its long, wine-stem heel.

“Oh, absolutely, just not used to seeing you in heels that tall.” He played with his tie and dived right back into his bad train of thought. “I still think Bill was acting weird about you again.”

“Don’t worry,” I said. “It’ll all be over after tonight.”

“That sounds ominous.” He grinned at me. “You and Valerie aren’t planning to murder me, are you?”

“Nothing so dramatic.” I gave him a kiss on the cheek. His hands brought me into a kiss on the lips. I let it happen. I wanted him at ease and so my lips lingered and even parted a little so he could tease me with his tongue.
